Salvation is the reason Jesus came to earth to redeem us from sin and its eternal judgment. The Bible says that all have sinned (Romans 3:23) and the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord (Romans 6:23).
Because God is a holy God, sin separates us from Him and thereby keeps us out of heaven. All of mankind is destined to an eternity in hell because of sin but because God so loved the world, He gave His only begotten Son, so that whoever believes in Him, might not perish but have everlasting life (John 3:16). All mankind is under judgment for their sins, but Christ died on the cross, God having placed all sin on Him and Jesus received the wrath of God for sin. Jesus alone paid the price for sin, and through Him alone can we experience God’s forgiveness and rejoice in the eternal hope of everlasting life with Him.
Salvation is not something we can work for or obtain by human effort. Ephesians 2:8-9 clearly states, For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast. How then, can we be saved? Only by the grace of God’s gift of salvation, that we receive by faith in what Christ did on the cross: that He died and took the wrath of God for sin in our place. We are to confess our sins to God, repent of them, and receive His gift of salvation by faith. Then we live a life of obedience that is pleasing to God.
